- Can you drink the water in South Africa?
Yes, the water is safe to drink although bottled water is freely available.
- Are we guaranteed to see the Big Five (elephant, rhino, leopard, lion, buffalo)?
Every effort is made on game drives to see as much wildlife as possible. Please keep in mind that your chances of seeing certain animals depend on the region you are staying in.
- Can we go on bush walks and are they safe to go on?
Yes, most private camps offer bush walk for visitors. Bush walks are very informative and are safe to go on, clients are accompanies by a certified trekker and guide that ensure the safety of the group.
- Are children welcome to go on Safari?
Most private game lodges welcome children under 12 years of age. Children over 12 are normally charged at full price. Please note that parents are responsible for children at all times and that children under the age of 16 are generally not allowed to go on bush walks. Please advise if special dietary requirements are necessary.
- Can I be contacted from a foreign country while on Safari? Can I rent a cell phone to use for the duration of my stay?
You may be able to make international phone calls depending on the bush lodge you stay in. International phone calls are not included in your stay. Phones with GSM compatibility can be used in most areas of the Kruger National Park. Yes, you can rent a cell phone at the airport with service all over South Africa.
- Do I need to take any medication before going to South Africa?
It is advisable to check with your general practitioner before heading to South Africa but generally you do not need to take any special medication. Depending on which area of the country you plan to visit it is often recommended to take precautions for malaria.
- Is it safe to travel to South Africa?
Just as in visiting any country certain precautions need to be taken. Most of the tourist destinations are free of crime but we would not recommend for ladies to be accompanied when going for walks at night. Upon request, we will organize for your travel group to be accompanied by one of our local guides whom are familiar with all the areas in South Africa.
- What currency is used in South Africa?
The “Rand” is the official currency of South Africa. Credit cards can be used in most locations throughout South Africa. Currency can be exchanged at the airport but is advisable to use a credit card where possible since exchange rates are not that favourable.
- Is tipping customary?
Generally tipping at 10% is customary but for special service a larger percentage is appreciated.
- Is it always hot or what is the average temperature?
Be prepared for some cooler weather especially on the early morning game drives when you generally go out around 5AM. Depending on the time of your of your visit milder weather can be expected with the average temperature being around 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Are taxi-cabs freely available?
Taxi-cabs are not as freely available as in most countries. Please be advised that you are only to use registered companies. Most often it is better to have your hotel call a car service when possible.
- What time of the year is the best time to visit South Africa?
The best time of the year to visit the game reserves are from March to October. Not only do these times offer the most suitable conditions for game viewing since the grass is not as high, it is also considered “low season” and therefore offer better tariffs than other times of the year.
- Do I need a passport and a visa for travel in South Africa?
Yes, you do need a passport for travel, valid for 6 months from entry with a return flight. However, you do not need a visa as an United States citizen.
- How much luggage am I allowed to bring?
You are allowed two suitcases, not weighing more than 50lbs combined, and an additional carry on bag, for international travel. In most private game lodges there are no baggage limitations, however, we are more than happy to accommodate our guests where necessary.
